HSC & IB English Tutoring
“You want to write a sentence as clean as a bone. That is the goal.”
— James Baldwin
HSC English Tutoring
Studying English is a compulsory requirement of the HSC. One of the key differentiating factors between the quality of essays is how effectively the student shapes their argument to the demands of a specific question.
Our HSC English tutoring targets the strengths of students through our individualised approach, limiting our classes to one-to-one tuition or a microclass with two students. This approach facilitates the student’s own unique reading of their HSC Module texts, a key factor in success when writing for the HSC.
Our focus on academic writing refines the student’s ability to support their line of argument in an essay, and drills down into the nuances of effective analysis. To ensure the content of the sessions is relevant to the student’s school assessments and HSC requirements, our classes move in line with each student’s study program at school.
HSC English Masterclasses
Our centre has been in operation for over 15 years. 99% of our students come to us for tuition through word of mouth referrals from other students and parents.
As a consequence, our waitlist for individual HSC English tutoring is extensive. To offer support to students outside of our regular weekly timetable, we run HSC English Masterclasses on Saturdays via Zoom for Years 11 and 12. The online sessions cover the expectations of the key English modules, essay structure, and effective textual analysis.
The sessions are hosted by Dr Niven Kumar, with Dr Lucyna Swiatek answering student questions on chat in real time. We provide a resource with practical tips and sample thesis statements, paragraphs of analysis, and suggested resources.

IB English Tutoring
HL: ‘Literature’ and ‘Language and Literature’
SL: ‘Literature’ and ‘Language and Literature’
We cover all streams of IB English - HL, SL, Literature, and Language and Literature. Our IB tutoring is modelled on individual academic mentoring for the IB, examining the nuances of the texts set for study, and working on the skills required for Paper 1, the guided literary analysis and the guided textual analysis.
Focusing on the individual strengths of each student, we offer guidance regarding essay writing for the HL essay, the Extended Essay (English), and comparative essay writing for Paper 2.
We also provide support for the Individual Oral assessment component, investigating the student’s interests in their chosen texts, and refining presentation and communication skills. Our mock question and answer sessions are vital in preparing for the question time following the presentation.
